Google ships Lyria 3.5 music model into Flow Music
Anyone making background music, a jingle, or a demo track can now describe a song in a prompt and get back sung lyrics with structure they can steer, inside a Google product. Google DeepMind rolled out Lyria 3.5 in Google Flow Music on July 29, 2026. The company says melodic structure, lyric quality, prompt adherence, and vocal expressiveness all improved.
What’s still unclear: The quality claims come from Google with no independent listening tests, and the sources reviewed said nothing about pricing or which regions get it.

Two existing OpenAI API settings triple GPT-5.6 agent benchmark scores
Developers building agents on OpenAI's tools can turn on two options that already exist and get much better results on multi-step tasks while paying for less text. OpenAI published measurements on July 29, 2026 showing that retained reasoning and context compaction, both available in its Responses API, lifted GPT-5.6 Sol from 13.3% to 38.3% on the public ARC-AGI-3 agent test. The same run used roughly a sixth as many output tokens, the units of text that billing is based on.
What’s still unclear: The numbers are OpenAI's own, the benchmark's official test setup deliberately leaves these two features out, and the scores still sit below the estimated human baseline.

Cadence and Synopsys tune chip-design tools for NVIDIA's Vera CPU
NVIDIA said on July 27, 2026 that it is running its own CPU and GPU design work on its Vera processor, and that Cadence and Synopsys are optimizing their chip-design software for it. Those tools, known as electronic design automation, are what engineers use to lay out and verify a chip before it goes to a factory. Design turnaround is one of the quieter constraints on AI hardware supply, so faster runs shorten the gap between drawing up a new accelerator and manufacturing it.

OpenAI opens free frontier-model access to selected academic institutions
Research groups that could not pay for subscriptions to the newest and most capable AI models can now use them at no cost for literature reviews, grant drafting, and analysis work. OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Academic Researchers on July 29, 2026, starting with 10,000 researchers, and access is already switched on at the Institute for Advanced Study and the École Normale Supérieure. The package includes GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, business-grade privacy, and data kept out of model training by default.
