A compromised dependency entered LiteLLM's CI/CD pipeline (the automated process for building and releasing software), and malicious versions 1.82.7 and 1.82.8 ran code whenever Python started. Working viruses designed with AI could support custom phage therapies and also raise dual-use concerns. Stanford researchers used a genomic language model (an AI system trained on genetic sequences) to design 16 complete, functional bacteriophage genomes. A cocktail of the resulting viruses infected E. coli strains that resisted the natural phage used as their model.
