Thinking Machines releases Inkling, an Apache-2.0 open-weights multimodal base model

Thinking Machines Lab published Inkling, a 975B-parameter (41B active) Mixture-of-Experts multimodal model trained on text, images, audio and video, under an Apache-2.0 license, with a smaller 276B variant promised later. Developers and companies get a large, permissively licensed base model they can fine-tune and self-host, rather than renting a closed API.

Worth knowing: By the lab's own admission it is not a frontier model; it is a base model meant for fine-tuning, not a ready-to-use assistant.
